Born May 14, 1906 in Gifu Prefecture, Itakura Itsusetsu (Itakura Yonezō) studied Itsudō-ha Kinko-ryū shakuhachi under Hayashi Itsuki (Kawamoto Itsudō lineage). He began teaching in 1925. He belonged to the Doyū-kai, the Hida Ichi-ichi-sangun Sankyoku-kai, and was an active teacher and performer for more than 50 years.
