Ishibashi Gozan (Ishibashi Kazuo) was born August 15, 1928. A graduate of the Matsue Middle School, he studied Tozan-ryū shakuhachi under Yamaguchi Kōzan (a student of Fujii Ryūzan), achieving the rank of Dai-Shihan (grand master) and the title Chikurin-ken, the highest honor bestowed in the Tozan-ryū. He served as the Chief of the Shimane Prefecture branch of the Tozan-ryū, and as a member of the Jun-Shihan (associate instructor) Examination Committee.
