Fuchigami Rafael Hiroshi

Born in Brazil. After majoring in flute at the Faculty of Music of the State University of Campinas, he switched to shakuhachi and obtained a master's degree at the same university's graduate school. In 2013, he studied in Japan for about six months on a scholarship from the São Paulo Research Foundation. In 2015, he returned to Japan on a five-year scholarship from the Nippon Foundation. He studied shakuhachi under both Kakizakai Kaoru and Sugawara Kuniyoshi, and mastered classical honkyoku and Kinkoryu shakuhachi under Yokoyama Katsuya. In 2020, he obtained his doctorate in shakuhachi research from the Tokyo College of Music Graduate School. He is currently a special researcher at the Institute of Ethnomusicology. He is a member of the Japan Music Group, JSPN, and Amabuki Doukokai.
