Born July 6, 1942 in Tokyo, Itō Shūrei (Itō Shūsuke) studied Meian-ryū shakuhachi under Teshigawara Tekiyuū and Tomimori Kyozan. He started teaching in 1966. He belonged to the Myoan Kyozanbō Dōyū-kai and Myoan Fuke-shū waraku Zen-kai.
